EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked efforts to cut federal homeland security funding to local governments that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official stated the case was “another example” of linking federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to New Orleans prior to the new year, alongside an active border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to accept a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after concluding a formal agreement with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit to demand the stripping of the current president’s name from a prominent cultural institution in Washington DC.

Experts point out that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a wider ideology in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy actions.
